Having a poster in your room or home office is a great way to become familiar with Cisco products. When you are looking at the poster a little bit each day, it will eventually  “rub off” on you. Find a Cisco poster that covers different hardware models, or maybe one that lists the different commands found in the Cisco IOS and software programs they have.

Cisco also has great software utilities that can guide you through the process of learning how networks operate.   Packet Tracer is their flagship software suite, which is only offered to those who are either in the Cisco Academy or have been in the past. This free program is a godsend for teachers, who are able to easily create labs and print them off for students.

You can find other types of software as well, that instead acts like a dictionary or reference guide. These programs are free for everyone, and not just Cisco students. Having a Cisco dictionary around is ideal for the workplace, for when you need to know what a command or piece of hardware does immediately. Students find it useful, as explanations are given in addition to command names.

Cisco has their own line of books and learning materials. The only downside is that these manuals are often hard to read and require attention to detail in order to allow the information to sink in. Books also are subpar in terms of quick reference, as they are thick with information and flipping through pages can be time consuming. Desktop software and posters are quicker, but books tend to be more thorough in explanations.

If all you need is a quick reference, consider using the help tool in the Cisco IOS. This help tool will quickly show you different commands that you are able to use, show how to use them, and give a brief description. It will not teach you how to use the commands in detail, so you will need to consult an expert or book for that. The in-program help feature is best suited for someone who might have forgotten a simple command.

Final Thoughts

Every Cisco student knows that the field they are in is not easy. In fact, Cisco classes are among some of the hardest if you go far enough along into the program. Reconsider all of the references mentioned to see what kind of help you need to aid you in your Cisco endeavors.

Two computers that are connected through a router are actually on separate networks if properly configured. Having a computer communicate another on a different network is a complex process, but Packet Tracer makes it easy to setup the design and configuration.In about 10-15 minutes, the most basic of all networks can be constructed and working.

The running configuration of the router can be accessed by using a console cable and setting up a connection from one of the desktop machines. The console cable isn\’t necessary for Packet Tracer, but if you plan on programming a real router you will definitely need one. You will also need a crossover cable so that you may connect the desktop machines to the router\’s individual Ethernet ports.

Each of the computers on the network will need an IP address for routing information from one network to another. You will also have to assign an IP address to each Ethernet port of the router. The Ethernet port connected to a single desktop machine will share the same network address, but will have a different host address. There will be two separate networks; one on each of the Ethernet ports. The IP address you assign may not be a reserved number or duplicated among ports.

Even with all of the IP address information in place, and the Ethernet ports configured, there is still something missing. We haven\’t installed a gateway address on the desktop machines. Without a gateway address, the computer won\’t be able to send and receive information over the network. It\’s simple to assign: the gateway address is going to be the IP address of the Ethernet interface that is connected to the desktop in question.

We can confirm that the network was set up properly by pinging a computer from another. As long as you did everything correctly, you should get a success message when using the command line interface. If you get an error regarding a time out, odds are you have input the wrong IP address information or forgot to open the Ethernet ports of the router. Troubleshooting is a valuable skill to have, so try to fix the problem yourself before asking for help if you get stuck on a problem.

Final Thoughts

A basic network is easy to setup in theory, but harder to actually create. Confusing Cisco IOS commands and problems such as a faulty cable is enough to give anyone a hard time. Internet tutorials and troubleshooting tactics are a good solution if you have hit a stumbling block.

As routers are connected to networks, look for a program that includes basic networking skills (for example Network+, perhaps with A+) before you start a CCNA. You must have a basic grasp of networks prior to starting your Cisco training or the chances are you’ll fall behind. When you’ve qualified and are on the job market, companies will expect good networking skills in addition to the CCNA.

Start with a bespoke training program that covers everything you need to know prior to commencing your Cisco training.

Top training providers tend to use a web-based 24 hours-a-day package pulling in several support offices across the globe. You\’re offered an environment which seamlessly accesses whichever office is appropriate any time of the day or night: Support when you need it.

If you accept anything less than direct-access 24×7 support, you\’ll very quickly realise that you\’ve made a mistake. You might not want to use the service late at night, but you\’re bound to use weekends, early mornings or late evenings.

A study programme should always lead to a fully recognised major qualification at the finale – not a useless \’in-house\’ plaque for your wall.

From the perspective of an employer, only the big-boys like Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or Adobe (for example) will open the right doors. Anything less just doesn\’t cut the mustard.

Beginning from the idea that it makes sense to choose the job we want to do first and foremost, before we can even chew over which method of training meets that requirement, how are we supposed to find the right direction?

Flicking through a list of IT job-titles is no use whatsoever. The majority of us don\’t really appreciate what our own family members do for a living – so we have no hope of understanding the ins and outs of a specific IT job.

Reflection on many issues is important if you need to expose the right answer for you:

* Your personality can play an important role – what things get your juices flowing, and what tasks you really dislike.

* Are you aiming to accomplish a key aspiration – like being your own boss someday?

* What priority do you place on travelling time and locality vs salary?

* Because there are so many different sectors to gain certifications for in Information Technology – you will have to pick up some background information on what sets them apart.

* The time and energy you\’ll have available to commit getting qualified.

For most people, dissecting each of these concepts requires a good chat with someone who can investigate each area with you. And not just the certifications – but the commercial requirements and expectations of the market as well.

Shut Down your computer. Do this properly if at all possible by going through the Start Menu to turn your system off. If your system is completely locked up, you can press and hold your computer’s power button for 5-10 seconds and the tower will turn off.

Step 2.
Unplug your computer. This is an important step! Unplug your computer by removing the cord from the power supply. This is almost always the top black cord on your tower. If you are using a laptop or notebook computer, remove your battery and then unplug the power cord from the unit. DO not simply turn off your surge protector. It is important that you unplug the cord from the computer.

Step 3.
Unplug your Internet equipment. Because different people have different home networking situations, you may have more of less equipment than is mentioned here. If you have High Speed Internet, you will have either a cable modem, a DSL modem, or a satellite modem. Whichever you have, unplug the power cord from the back of your modem. Some people with more than on computer in their home may have an Internet router to split their high speed connection so each computer can connect. If you have a router (typical brands include Linksys, Netgear, or D-Link) please remove the power cord from this unit as well.

Step 4.
Wait 30 seconds. Once you have unplugged all of your equipment, wait 30 seconds for any residual power to drain from your devices. You can help this process by pressing the power button of your PC. Although the PC is not plugged in, pressing the power button will help drain all left over power from the unit’s motherboard.

Step 5.
Reconnect devices. Next you will need to reconnect all of your devices IN A SPECIFIC ORDER. First, plug in the power cord for your modem (if you have high speed internet). Wait for the modem to have a solid Internet connection with your internet service provider. This can take as long as 2 minutes, so be patient. Next, plug in your router (if you have one). Wait for the lights on the router to indicate it has established a good connection to your modem (this could take up to 30 seconds). Finally plug your computer tower back in. If you use a laptop, insert the battery and then plug the unit back in. Turn on your computer by pressing the power button and allow it to boot fully.

Step 6.
The computer should now boot normally and you should be able to establish a connection to the Internet over your high-speed connection. If you continue to experience problems, contact us or your computer hardware technician for further troubleshooting advice or repairs.
